Ingredients

  • 2 slices sourdough bread slices
  • 4 ounces cooked ham slices
  • 1 cup dairy-free cheese shreds
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a small saucepan, combine the almond milk and cornstarch. Whisk until the cornstarch is fully dissolved and there are no lumps.

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat and add the nutritional yeast, dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the dairy-free cheese shreds until they melt into a smooth sauce.

Step 5

Place the sourdough bread slices on a baking sheet. Lightly brush each slice with olive oil.

Step 6

Layer the ham slices evenly on top of the bread.

Step 7

Spoon the cheese sauce generously over the ham on each slice.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the bread edges are crispy and the cheese sauce is bubbly and slightly browned.

Step 9

Remove the sandwiches from the oven and let cool slightly. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Step 10

Serve warm as a delicious and satisfying open-faced sandwich.
