Ingredients

  • 1 large Vidalia onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup non-dairy milk
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the onion and cut off 1/2 inch from the pointy stem end, leaving the root end intact to hold the petals together.

Step 2

Place the onion cut-side down on a clean cutting board. Starting 1/2 inch from the root, make downward cuts all around the onion to create 'petals.' Make sure not to slice all the way to the root.

Step 3

Gently spread the onion petals apart. Soak the onion in cold water for 10 minutes to help open up the petals, then drain and pat dry.

Step 4

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.

Step 5

In another bowl, whisk together the non-dairy milk, cornstarch, and apple cider vinegar until smooth.

Step 6

Dip the onion into the dry flour mixture, making sure to coat each petal. Shake off any excess.

Step 7

Next, dip the onion into the non-dairy milk mixture, ensuring that all the flour is moistened. Allow any excess to drain off.

Step 8

Finally, again dredge the onion in the dry flour mixture, pressing to adhere the coating.

Step 9

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).

Step 10

Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil, petal side down, and fry for 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Step 11

Remove the onion from oil and drain on paper towels.

Step 12

Serve immediately with your favorite dairy-free dipping sauce.
