Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the ground beef, Italian sausage, and onion, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon. Cook until the meat is browned and the onion is tender, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

Step 2

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir to combine, reduce the heat to low, and let the sauce simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles and lay them flat on a clean surface or kitchen towel to prevent sticking.

Step 4

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and fresh parsley. Stir until well mixed and set aside.

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 6

Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce over the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange 3-4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping.

Step 7

Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by one-third of the shredded mozzarella cheese and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan. Top with one-third of the meat sauce.

Step 8

Repeat the layers two more times: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, Parmesan, and meat sauce.

Step 9

Finish with a final layer of noodles, topped with the remaining sauce and a generous layer of shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (avoid letting the foil touch the cheese) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 11

Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with additional chopped parsley, if desired, and serve warm.
