Ingredients

  • 200 grams Urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 2 small Green chilies
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 0.25 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 500 milliliters Oil
  • 0 as needed Water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the urad dal thoroughly under running water and soak it in enough water for about 4 hours or until they become soft.

Step 2

Drain the soaked urad dal and transfer it to a blender. Grind the dal to a coarse paste without adding any water. If needed, add only a tablespoon of water to help with the grinding.

Step 3

Finely chop the onion, green chilies, and coriander leaves. Add them to the dal paste.

Step 4

Add salt, red chili powder, cumin seeds, and baking soda to the mixture. Mix everything well to combine thoroughly.

Step 5

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop a small portion of the batter into the oil. If it rises to the top quickly, the oil is ready.

Step 6

Using a tablespoon, drop small portions of the batter into the hot oil carefully, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.

Step 7

Fry the bhajias for 3-5 minutes, or until they turn crispy and golden brown, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Step 8

Use a slotted spoon to remove the bhajias from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Step 9

Serve the daal bhajias hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
