Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for crust)
  • 1 cup butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1 cup water (cold)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground pork
  • 2 medium russet potatoes (diced small)
  • 0.5 cup rutabaga (diced small)
  • 1 medium onion (diced small)
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon thyme (dried)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and 1 teaspoon of salt for the crust.

Step 2

Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

Add the cold water gradually, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough just comes together. Do not overwork.

Step 4

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions, flatten into disks, and wrap each tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 6

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, diced potatoes, rutabaga, onion, 1.5 teaspoons of salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Mix well to create the filling.

Step 7

On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion of dough into a circle about 1/8-inch thick and 8-9 inches in diameter.

Step 8

Spoon about 1 cup of the filling into the center of the dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a semi-circle and crimp the edges tightly to seal.

Step 9

Place the prepared pasty on the baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough and filling.

Step 10

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon of water to make the egg wash. Brush each pasty with the egg wash to ensure a golden crust.

Step 11

Using a sharp knife, cut two small slits on the top of each pasty to release steam during baking.

Step 12

Bake the pasties in the preheated oven for 55-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is cooked through.

Step 13

Remove the pasties from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Step 14

Enjoy your Da Yooper Pasties warm or at room temperature. They're perfect for lunch, dinner, or a snack on the go!
