Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 0.25 cup Unsalted butter (softened, for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 0 optional Food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture and mix until just incorporated. Avoid overmixing.

Step 5

Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 7

Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.

Step 8

Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch of space between cookies.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.

Step 10

To prepare the butter icing, beat the powdered sugar and softened butter together until combined. Add the milk and vanilla extract, and mix until smooth and spreadable.

Step 11

If desired, divide the icing into separate bowls and add food coloring to each bowl for different colors.

Step 12

Using a small spatula or piping bag, decorate the cooled cookies with the butter icing. Add sprinkles or other decorations if desired.

Step 13

Allow the icing to set completely before serving or storing the cookies in an airtight container.
