Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoons Sugar
  • 0.75 cups Warm water
  • 0.25 cups Plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or ghee (melted for brushing)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cumin seeds. Mix well.

Step 3

Add the yogurt, vegetable oil, and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a small amount of flour, a tablespoon at a time.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

Step 7

On a floured surface, roll out each dough ball into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 8

Preheat a skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Place one naan onto the hot pan and cook for about 2 minutes, until bubbles form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for about 1-2 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the naan from the pan and immediately brush with melted butter or ghee. Garnish with chopped cilantro, if desired.

Step 10

Repeat the cooking process with the remaining dough portions. Serve warm.
