  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 large White onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium Carrot, finely diced
  • 1 Celery stick, finely diced
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 400 ml Beef stock
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Fresh thyme leaves, chopped
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1.2 kg Potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 50 g Butter
  • 100 ml Milk
  • 150 g Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 75 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 to taste Salt
  • 1 to taste Ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ground beef and pork to the pan. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned and cooked through.

Step 6

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, then sprinkle the flour over the mixture, stirring well to combine.

Step 7

Pour in the beef stock, followed by the Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and let it cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the bay leaf after cooking and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water for 15–20 minutes, or until tender.

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Layer the meat mixture into the bottom of a large ovenproof dish, spreading it out evenly.

Top the meat with the mashed potatoes, spreading it to cover the entire surface.

In a small bowl, mix the grated cheddar cheese with the breadcrumbs.

Sprinkle the cheese and breadcrumb mixture evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
