Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups dried figs (stems removed)
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons sprinkles (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking powder.

Step 2

Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.

Step 4

Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Step 5

In a food processor, combine the figs, raisins, walnuts, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon, and honey. Blend into a smooth, sticky paste to create the filling. Set aside.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 7

On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut the dough into strips about 4 inches wide.

Step 8

Spread a thin line of the fig filling down the center of each strip. Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges by pressing gently.

Step 9

Cut the filled strips into 2-inch pieces, transfer them to the prepared baking sheets, and repeat with the remaining dough and filling.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden around the edges. Allow to cool completely on wire racks.

Step 11

For the icing, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk until smooth. Drizzle the icing over the cooled cookies and decorate with sprinkles if desired.

Step 12

Let the icing set before serving or storing. Enjoy your homemade Cucidati Italian Fig Cookies!
