Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large (diced) yellow onion
  • 1 large (diced) green bell pepper
  • 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 0.25 cup dry white wine
  • 0.5 cup (sliced) green olives (stuffed with pimento)
  • 0.33 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon (or to taste) black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons (chopped) fresh cilantro (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 4-5 minutes, or until softened.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 6-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat, if needed.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste and mix thoroughly into the beef mixture. Cook for 1 minute.

Step 6

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and dry white wine. Mix well to combine and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.

Step 7

Add the sliced green olives, raisins, ground cumin, ground cinnamon, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Let the Picadillo simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper, if needed. Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Step 10

Optional: Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro.

Step 11

Serve the Cuban Ground Beef Hash warm with white rice, fried plantains, or crusty bread.
