Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Instant yeast
  • 0.75 cup Warm water
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 0.25 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon Dried parsley
  • 1 large Egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a small skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and chopped onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 3

Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, followed by melted butter and the cooled caramelized onions. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

Step 4

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if the dough is sticky.

Step 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 7

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into thin sticks, about 6 inches long, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 8

Brush the beaten egg over the breadsticks to create a glossy finish.

Step 9

Mix Parmesan cheese, dried thyme, and dried parsley in a small bowl. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the breadsticks.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, until the breadsticks are golden brown and crisp.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the breadsticks cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature!
