Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 units garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 units celery stalks, diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 250 milliliters beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 150 grams shredded cheddar cheese
  • 200 grams all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 60 grams cold butter, cubed
  • 120 milliliters milk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 2

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil, then sauté the diced onion, garlic, carrots, and celery until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

Step 4

Stir in the tomato paste, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 5

Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture into a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.

Step 6

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, rub the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 7

Pour in the milk and stir with a fork until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

Step 8

Drop spoonfuls of the dough over the casserole, covering it as much as possible.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.

Step 10

Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
