Ingredients

  • 2 Large onions
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup Cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.75 cup Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Crushed red chili flakes
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Separate the slices into individual rings and set them aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, chili powder, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.

Step 3

In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until smooth. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, whisking until a smooth batter forms.

Step 4

Place the panko breadcrumbs in a shallow dish and mix in the crushed red chili flakes for extra heat.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).

Step 6

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated, then dredge it in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the coating adheres.

Step 7

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each batch for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Step 8

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 9

Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as spicy mayo or ranch.
