Ingredients

  • 1 slice Bread (thick slice, like sourdough or Texas toast)
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1 pinch Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Grated cheese (optional, like cheddar or Parmesan)
  • 1 teaspoon Chopped fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Using a round cookie cutter or the rim of a glass, cut a hole (about 2-3 inches across) in the center of the bread slice. Set the bread and the cut-out piece aside.

Step 2

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the butter, allowing it to melt and coat the pan evenly.

Step 3

Place the slice of bread and the cut-out center piece in the skillet. Toast one side for about 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 4

Flip the bread and toasted cut-out to the other side. Crack the egg into the hole in the center of the bread.

Step 5

Season the egg with a pinch of salt and black pepper. If desired, sprinkle grated cheese over the egg yolk and edges of the bread.

Step 6

Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the egg whites are set but the yolk remains runny (cook longer if you prefer a fully cooked yolk).

Step 7

Remove the bread-and-egg combination from the skillet using a spatula, along with the toasted cut-out piece.

Step 8

Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve immediately with the toasted center on the side for dipping.
