  • 2 sheets Puff pastry sheets
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.125 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1.5 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Cooked ham, finely chopped
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheets to approximately 1/8-inch thickness. Cut each sheet into 12 equal 3x3-inch squares and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Refrigerate while preparing the filling.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook the mixture over medium heat until it thickens into a smooth béchamel sauce, about 3-4 minutes.
