Ingredients

  • 4 lbs Pork shoulder (bone-in or boneless)
  • 1 medium Onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup Chicken broth
  • 1 cup Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Ground cumin
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of your crock pot to create a flavor base for the pork.

Step 2

Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels, then season it all over with the paprika, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper.

Step 3

Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onion and garlic in the crock pot.

Step 4

In a medium bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Pour the mixture over the pork.

Step 5

Cover the crock pot with the lid and set it to cook on LOW for 8 hours, or HIGH for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and easily falls apart with a fork.

Step 6

Once the pork is fully cooked, carefully transfer it to a large cutting board or bowl. Use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces, discarding any excess fat or connective tissue.

Step 7

Optional: Skim the fat from the cooking liquid in the crock pot and return the shredded pork to the liquid to keep it moist and flavorful.

Step 8

Serve the shredded pork on sandwiches, tacos, or as a main dish with your favorite sides. Optionally, mix the pork with BBQ sauce for a tangy finish.
