Ingredients

  • 8 cups Cornbread
  • 4 cups Day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 cup Celery, finely chopped
  • 1 cup Onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cups Chicken broth
  • 2 large Eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup Butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons Poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Sage (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the cornbread ahead of time and allow it to cool completely. Crumble the cornbread into a large mixing bowl.

Step 2

Add the cubed day-old bread to the bowl. Toss gently to combine.

Step 3

In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté the chopped celery and onion over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the cooked celery and onion mixture to the bread mixture in the bowl.

Step 5

In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, beaten eggs, melted butter, poultry seasoning, sage (if using), salt, and black pepper.

Step 6

Pour the liquid mixture over the bread mixture and gently stir until fully combined. The mixture should be moist but not soupy; add an additional 1/2 cup of broth if needed.

Step 7

Lightly grease the inside of your Crock Pot with cooking spray or a little butter.

Step 8

Transfer the dressing mixture to the Crock Pot and spread it out into an even layer.

Step 9

Cover and cook on low heat for 4 hours. Avoid opening the lid during cooking to ensure even moisture distribution.

Step 10

After 4 hours, check that the dressing is cooked through and set in the center. If desired, switch to the warm setting until ready to serve.
