Ingredients

  • 4 medium Russet potatoes
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

Peel the russet potatoes and grate them using a box grater or a food processor with a shredding attachment.

Step 2

Transfer the grated potatoes to a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth. Wring out as much moisture as possible over the sink or a bowl. Removing excess water ensures the hash browns turn out crispy.

Step 3

Place the drained, grated potatoes in a mixing bowl and add salt, ground black pepper, and all-purpose flour. Mix everything thoroughly until evenly combined.

Step 4

Heat a large nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan.

Step 5

Once the butter is melted and the oil is shimmering, add half of the potato mixture to the skillet. Spread it out evenly into a thin layer, about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 6

Cook the hash brown without stirring for 5-7 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown and crispy. Flip the hash brown carefully using a wide spatula and cook the other side for another 5-7 minutes.

Step 7

Transfer the cooked hash brown to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Repeat the process with the remaining potato mixture, adding the remaining butter and oil to the pan as needed.

Step 8

Slice or cut the hash browns into portions, and serve immediately while still warm. Enjoy your crispy homemade hash browns with your favorite breakfast dishes or condiments.
