Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup chicken or beef broth
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Once the oil is hot, add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until it is browned and fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 3

Push the cooked ground beef to one side of the skillet and add the diced onion. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir the onions, garlic, and beef together. Reduce the heat to medium and add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, and broth. Stir well to combine. Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes to thicken slightly.

Step 5

Cut the cream cheese into small cubes and add it to the skillet. Stir constantly until the cream cheese melts and fully incorporates into the mixture, creating a creamy texture.

Step 6

Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to taste. Continue to simmer for an additional 1-2 minutes to ensure all flavors meld together.

Step 7

While the beef mixture cooks, toast the burger buns. Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter. Place the buns cut side down and toast for 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 8

Spoon the creamy Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns. Serve immediately and enjoy!
