Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 2 cups Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cups Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 cups Breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2

Peel and slice the russet potatoes into thin, uniform rounds (about 1/8 inch thick). Set them aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.

Step 4

Slowly whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Drain and dry the sliced potatoes. Layer half of the potato slices evenly in the prepared baking dish.

Step 7

Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potato layer, spreading it evenly. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.

Step 8

Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 9

If using breadcrumbs, sprinkle them evenly over the top of the casserole after 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for added flavor and color.
