Ingredients

  • 2.5 lbs russet potatoes
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic (optional, peeled)
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the russet potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks, about 2 inches in diameter. This ensures even cooking.

Step 2

Place the chopped potatoes and peeled garlic cloves (if using) into a large pot. Cover them with cold water, ensuring the water is about 2 inches above the potatoes.

Step 3

Add 1 teaspoon of kosher salt to the water. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook the potatoes for 15-20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.

Step 4

While the potatoes cook, warm the heavy cream and whole milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Add 4 tablespoons of butter to the mixture, stirring until the butter melts. Do not let the mixture boil.

Step 5

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them thoroughly in a colander. Return the potatoes and garlic (if used) to the empty pot and place it back over low heat. Allow the potatoes to steam for 1-2 minutes to remove any excess moisture.

Step 6

Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes until smooth. Alternatively, use an electric hand mixer on low speed for a fluffier texture.

Step 7

Gradually stir in the warm cream and milk mixture, a little at a time, until fully incorporated and the potatoes reach your desired consistency.

Step 8

Taste and season with 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper, adjusting as needed.

Step 9

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and drizzle it over the top for extra richness. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired.

Step 10

Serve immediately and enjoy your creamy mashed taters!
