Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 third cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 Large egg
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 Egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon Water (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for glaze)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla extract (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk (110°F), 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, and the packet of active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is foamy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the yeast mixture, 4 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter, and 1 lightly beaten egg.

Step 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, adding the remaining 1 cup of flour as necessary to prevent sticking, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough rises, prepare the filling by mixing 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of orange zest, 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a 12x15 inch rectangle on a floured surface.

Step 7

Spread the cream cheese and orange mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

Step 8

Roll the dough tightly from the longer side into a cylinder. Slice it into 12 equal rolls and place them cut side up in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Step 9

Cover the dish with a damp towel and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush the rolls lightly with an egg wash made by whisking 1 egg with 1 teaspoon of water.

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 12

While the rolls bake, make the glaze by whisking together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step 13

Allow the rolls to cool slightly before drizzling the glaze over the top. Serve warm.
