Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 8 ounces fresh strawberries
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup orange juice
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon zest of an orange
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the cranberries and strawberries under cold water. Remove stems from the strawberries and cut them into halves or quarters, depending on their size.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, orange juice, water, and orange zest. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved (about 2-3 minutes).

Step 3

Add the cranberries to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until they begin to pop (about 5-7 minutes). Stir occasionally.

Step 4

Once the cranberries start to pop, add the strawberries, cinnamon, and salt to the saucepan. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the strawberries soften and the mixture thickens.

Step 5

Mash the mixture lightly with the back of a spoon or a potato masher to achieve your desired consistency. For a chunkier sauce, leave larger pieces intact.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the sauce to cool for about 10 minutes. The sauce will thicken further as it cools.

Step 7

Transfer the cranberry strawberry sauce to a serving dish or an airtight container. Serve warm or chilled. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to one week.
