Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cups warm milk (approximately 110°F)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 cups powdered sugar (optional, for topping)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt.

Step 3

Melt the unsalted butter, then mix it with the eggs and the yeast mixture. Gradually add this wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the outer ring, one smaller for the center hole) to cut out donuts.

Step 7

Place the cut donuts and holes on a floured baking sheet. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise again for about 30-40 minutes, or until slightly puffed.

Step 8

Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C). Carefully fry the donuts a few at a time, cooking for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.

Step 9

Remove the fried donuts with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 10

If desired, toss the warm donuts in powdered sugar or a mixture of powdered sugar and ground cinnamon for extra flavor.

Step 11

Serve warm and enjoy your freshly made Cowboy Donuts!
