Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 3 units Eggs, large
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 3 cups Apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 0.5 cups Chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar, packed (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract (for caramel sauce)
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt (for caramel sauce)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and combined.

Step 4

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter will be thick.

Step 5

Fold in the diced apples and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 8

While the cake bakes, prepare the caramel sauce by combining the heavy cream, butter, and brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Step 9

Stir the caramel sauce constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to boil. Let it boil gently for 2 minutes, then remove it from heat.

Step 10

Stir in the vanilla extract and salt, and set the sauce aside to cool slightly.

Step 11

Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes.

Step 12

Drizzle the warm caramel sauce over the apple cake before serving. Optionally, serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
