Ingredients

  • 6 slices Thick-cut brioche bread
  • 3 Large eggs
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 0.25 cup Heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons Nutmeg, freshly grated
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar
  • 0 Maple syrup (for serving)
  • 0 Fresh fruit (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and grated nutmeg until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy.

Step 2

Pour the custard mixture into a shallow dish or pan large enough to fit the bread slices.

Step 3

Preheat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat.

Step 4

While the skillet is heating, dip each slice of brioche bread into the custard mixture, making sure both sides are evenly coated. Allow the bread to soak for about 10 seconds per side to fully absorb the liquid.

Step 5

Once the skillet is hot, add 1 tablespoon of butter and swirl it around to coat the surface evenly.

Step 6

Place a few slices of the soaked bread onto the skillet, making sure not to overcrowd it. Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crisp. Repeat with the remaining bread slices, adding the remaining tablespoon of butter as needed.

Step 7

Transfer the cooked French toast to a serving platter and dust with powdered sugar using a fine mesh sieve.

Step 8

Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup and optional fresh fruit, such as berries or banana slices.
