Ingredients

  • 2 pounds penne pasta
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 large onion, finely chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 56 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 12 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a large casserole dish and set aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, until fragrant.

Step 5

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is browned and fully cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease, if necessary.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta and meat sauce. Mix until the pasta is evenly coated.

Step 8

Transfer half of the pasta mixture to the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese over the layer.

Step 9

Add the remaining pasta mixture on top, followed by another 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top layer.

Step 10

Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 12

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired.
