Ingredients

  • 400 grams Firm tofu
  • 4 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Mirin
  • 1.5 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons Water (for cornstarch slurry)
  • 1 stalk (finely sliced) Green onion
  • 1 tablespoon Toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Step 1

1. Gently drain the tofu and pat it dry with a clean kitchen towel. Cut it into 2 cm cubes and set aside.

Step 2

2. Prepare the teriyaki sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 3

3. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the saucepan while stirring continuously. Let the sauce simmer for another minute until it thickens. Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely.

Step 4

4. Arrange the tofu cubes in a flat container, ensuring they are not stacked on top of each other. Pour the cooled teriyaki sauce over the tofu, covering each piece evenly. Cover the container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to allow the tofu to absorb the flavors.

Step 5

5. Once chilled, transfer the marinated tofu to a serving plate. Drizzle some of the remaining sauce from the container over the tofu.

Step 6

6. Garnish with finely sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds. Serve immediately as a cold appetizer or light side dish.
