Ingredients

  • 250 grams all-purpose flour
  • 50 grams granulated sugar
  • 10 grams baking powder
  • 2 grams salt
  • 60 grams unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 120 ml whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 5 ml vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg for egg wash

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed butter to the bowl. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.

Step 5

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and use a fork or spoon to gently combine until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it 2-3 times to bring it together. Pat the dough into a flat round shape about 2-3 cm thick.

Step 7

Using a round cutter (approximately 5 cm in diameter), cut out scones from the dough and place them onto the lined baking sheet. Re-roll any leftover dough and continue cutting until all dough is used.

Step 8

For the egg wash, beat the remaining egg and lightly brush it onto the tops of the scones to give them a golden, shiny finish.

Step 9

Bake the scones in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until they are risen and golden brown.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let the scones cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with clotted cream and jam!
