Ingredients

  • 6 medium russet potatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 garlic clove
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons parsley (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Peel and slice the potatoes into 1/8-inch thick rounds and set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic.

Step 4

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the heavy cream, milk, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, do not boil.

Step 6

Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a kitchen towel.

Step 7

In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, arrange one-third of the potato slices in an even layer.

Step 8

Pour a third of the cream and onion mixture evenly over the potatoes and sprinkle with a third of the cheese.

Step 9

Repeat layering twice more, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

Step 10

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and continue to bake for another 20-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 12

Let the potato bake cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.
