Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp Onion powder
  • 4 pieces Hamburger buns
  • 4 pieces Cheddar cheese slices (optional)
  • 4 pieces Lettuce leaves
  • 1 medium Tomato, sliced
  • 1 small Red onion, sliced into rings
  • 4 slices Pickles (optional)
  • 0.25 cup Ketchup
  • 0.25 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Mustard
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Gently mix until the seasonings are evenly distributed, being careful not to overmix.

Step 2

Divide the seasoned ground beef into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty about ¾-inch thick and slightly wider than the hamburger buns.

Step 3

Using your thumb, press a small indentation in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly and prevent shrinking.

Step 4

Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil and heat until shimmering.

Step 5

Place the patties in the skillet (or on the grill if grilling) and cook for 3-4 minutes on one side without moving them, until a golden-brown crust forms.

Step 6

Flip the patties and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done. If adding cheese, place a slice on top of each patty during the last 30 seconds of cooking and cover with a lid to melt.

Step 7

While the patties cook, toast the hamburger buns cut-side down on the skillet or grill for about 1 minute, or until lightly browned.

Step 8

Assemble the hamburgers: Spread ketchup, mayonnaise, or mustard (or all three) on the bottom half of each bun. Layer with lettuce, a cooked patty, tomato slice, red onion rings, and pickles, if desired. Top with the other half of the bun.

Step 9

Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes, such as fries or a salad.
