Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 1 medium, finely chopped Onion
  • 2 cloves, minced Garlic
  • 1 large Egg
  • 50 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 4 large Pretzel buns
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 200 g Sauerkraut
  • 4 tbsp German mustard
  • 4 slices (optional) Pickles

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a round patty roughly 1.5 cm thick. Press the center slightly with your thumb to prevent puffing while cooking.

Step 3

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the burger patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness. Avoid pressing down on the burgers as they cook to retain their juiciness.

Step 4

Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese during the last minute of cooking. Cover the pan with a lid to help melt the cheese.

Step 5

While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the pretzel buns in a dry skillet or under a broiler for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 6

To assemble the burgers, spread 1 tablespoon of German mustard on the bottom half of each pretzel bun. Place a cheese-topped patty on the bun, followed by a generous spoonful of sauerkraut, and a pickle slice if using. Finish with the top half of the pretzel bun.

Step 7

Serve the burgers immediately with your favorite sides, such as fries or a simple green salad. Enjoy your Classic German Burgers!
