Ingredients

  • 500 grams white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
  • 200 grams smoked haddock fillets
  • 150 grams raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 kilogram potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 500 milliliters milk
  • 60 grams unsalted butter
  • 30 grams all-purpose flour
  • 100 milliliters double cream
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 100 grams mature cheddar cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

Place the white fish fillets, smoked haddock, and shrimp into a large saucepan. Pour over 400 milliliters of the milk, adding a pinch of salt.

Step 3

Gently simmer over low heat for about 5-7 minutes, until the fish is just cooked through. Remove from heat and use a slotted spoon to transfer the fish and shrimp to a plate, removing any skin or bones from the fish.

Step 4

Reserve the milk in the saucepan.

Step 5

Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, then drain well.

Step 6

Mash the potatoes with 20 grams of butter, adding salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 7

Melt the remaining butter in another pan, stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes over medium heat.

Step 8

Gradually whisk in the reserved milk, creating a smooth sauce. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Step 9

Stir in the double cream and parsley, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

Step 10

Flake the cooked fish into bite-sized pieces and distribute them evenly in a baking dish, along with the shrimp.

Step 11

Pour the creamy sauce over the fish and shrimp, spreading evenly.

Step 12

Spread the mash over the fish mixture, ensuring it's covering completely to the edges.

Step 13

Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over the top of the mash.

Step 14

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Step 15

Allow the fish pie to rest for a few minutes before serving.
