In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a saucepan over low heat, melt 3/4 cup of the butter with the whole milk until the butter is fully melted. Let it cool to just warm.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, sugar, and salt. Stir well.
Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture along with the melted butter and milk mixture, and the egg.
Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.
Gradually add in the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a smooth dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-1.5 hours.
After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan, cover, and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes until visibly puffy.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Melt the remaining 1/4 cup of butter and keep it ready.
Beat the additional egg with a tablespoon of water to make an egg wash and brush it lightly over the top of each roll.
Optionally, sprinkle the tops with sea salt flakes.
Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
Remove from the oven and immediately brush with the melted butter for extra sheen and flavor.
Let the rolls cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
