Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of olive oil to the boiling water.
Add 12 ounces of egg noodles to the pot and cook according to the package instructions, usually about 7-8 minutes, until they are al dente.
While the noodles are cooking, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
Once the noodles are cooked, drain them in a colander, reserving about 1/2 cup of the pasta water.
