Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 2 cloves Garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even slices about 1/8 inch thick using a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer. Pat the slices dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

Step 3

Peel the garlic cloves and cut one in half. Rub the cut side of the garlic over the inside of a 9x13-inch or similar-sized baking dish. Discard the garlic or save it for another use.

Step 4

Grease the dish with the tablespoon of butter, ensuring all corners are coated.

Step 5

In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic (from the second clove), salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Gently heat the mixture, stirring occasionally, until warm but not boiling. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Layer half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly to ensure even coverage.

Step 7

Pour half of the warm cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the grated Gruyère cheese.

Step 8

Add the remaining potato slices in a second layer, followed by the rest of the cream mixture and the remaining Gruyère cheese on top.

Step 9

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it on the center rack in your preheated oven.

Step 10

Bake for 60 minutes covered, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly and the potatoes are fork-tender.

Step 11

Remove the gratin from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld. Enjoy!
