Ingredients

  • 16 oz ziti pasta
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 48 oz marinara sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook until al dente, according to the package instructions. Drain the pasta and toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil to prevent sticking. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 more minute, until fragrant.

Step 5

Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet with the beef mixture. Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and let cook for 10 minutes.

Step 6

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and 1 cup of Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and set aside.

Step 7

Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the cooked ziti on top.

Step 8

Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the pasta and spread gently with a spoon. Sprinkle 1.5 cups of shredded mozzarella over the ricotta layer.

Step 9

Top with half of the remaining meat sauce, then repeat the layers: the rest of the pasta, ricotta mixture, 1.5 cups of mozzarella, and the remaining meat sauce.

Step 10

Finish by sprinkling the remaining 0.5 cup of Parmesan cheese over the top.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Step 12

Let the baked ziti rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired. Enjoy!
