Ingredients

  • 6 medium Apples (Granny Smith or your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even slices (about 1/4 inch thick).

Step 2

Place the apple slices in a large bowl and drizzle them with the lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly, which will help prevent browning and add a touch of acidity.

Step 3

In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Mix thoroughly.

Step 4

Sprinkle the dry mixture over the apples in the large bowl. Stir gently until all apple slices are evenly coated with the sugar and spice mixture.

Step 5

In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.

Step 6

Once the butter is melted and begins to bubble slightly, add the coated apple slices to the skillet.

Step 7

Cook the apples over medium heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cook until the apples are tender but not mushy and the juices have thickened.

Step 8

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 9

Let the apple filling cool completely if using it as a pie or tart filling, or serve warm over pancakes, waffles, or ice cream.
