Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Ground cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons Unsalted butter (softened, for filling)
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon Milk (for frosting)

Directions

Step 1

Warm the milk in a small saucepan or microwave until it is about 110°F (just warm to the touch but not hot).

Step 2

Add 2 tablespoons of the butter to the warm milk and stir until melted. Mix in the sugar and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and egg. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead by hand or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and slightly sticky.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 5

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle, approximately 18x12 inches.

Step 6

For the filling, combine light brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Spread the softened butter evenly over the rolled-out dough. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the butter, pressing it lightly into the dough.

Step 7

Start rolling the dough tightly from the longer edge into a log shape. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and arrange them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish with a towel and let the rolls rise again for 30 minutes until puffy.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 10

While the rolls bake, make the frosting by beating together the powdered sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and spreadable.

Step 11

Remove the cinnamon rolls from the oven, let them cool slightly, and spread the frosting generously over the rolls while still warm. Serve and enjoy!
