Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Large apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar
  • 0.25 cups Rolled oats
  • 0.25 cups Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 0.5 cups Water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Wash the apples and use a corer or a small knife to remove the cores, leaving about 1/2 inch of the bottom intact so the filling doesn't leak out.

Step 3

In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, rolled oats, chopped pecans or walnuts, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Mix well.

Step 4

Add the vanilla extract and honey to the mixture, and then cut the unsalted butter into small pieces. Incorporate the butter into the mixture using your fingers or a fork until it becomes crumbly.

Step 5

Place the cored apples in a baking dish. Fill each apple cavity generously with the prepared filling, pressing down lightly to pack it in.

Step 6

Pour the water into the baking dish, around the base of the apples. This will create steam and help the apples soften as they bake.

Step 7

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Step 8

Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden and crisp.

Step 9

Carefully remove the baked apples from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Step 10

Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
