Ingredients

  • 500 grams beef (chuck or flank steak, thinly sliced)
  • 400 grams dried Chinese wheat noodles (or your preference)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 thumb-sized piece ginger (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 4 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 500 milliliters beef broth or water
  • 2 heads bok choy (halved lengthwise or roughly chopped)
  • 3 scallions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain, rinse with cold water, and set aside.

Step 2

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the sliced ginger and garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 3

Add the cinnamon stick and star anise to the pan and toast for 1 minute to release their aroma.

Step 4

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the sliced beef to the pan. Stir-fry the beef until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar. Mix well to coat the beef in the sauce evenly.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth (or water) and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for 20 minutes until the beef is tender.

Step 7

Add the bok choy to the pan during the last 5 minutes of cooking, allowing it to wilt and soften in the sauce.

Step 8

To serve, divide the cooked noodles among serving bowls and spoon the cinnamon beef mixture over the noodles.

Step 9

Garnish with sliced scallions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately and enjoy!
