Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread (day-old preferred)
  • 3 medium Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 6 large Eggs
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 0.5 cup Heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup Maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2

Cut the French bread into 1-inch slices and set aside.

Step 3

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.

Step 4

In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 5

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, maple syrup, and the remaining teaspoon of ground cinnamon until smooth.

Step 6

Arrange half of the French bread slices in a single layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Step 7

Evenly spread the caramelized apples over the bread layer.

Step 8

Place the remaining French bread slices on top, creating a sandwich-like layer with the apples in between.

Step 9

Pour the egg mixture evenly over the entire casserole, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Press the bread slices gently to help them absorb the mixture.

Step 10

Let the casserole sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the bread to fully soak up the custard mixture.

Step 11

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set.

Step 13

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Step 14

Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with an optional drizzle of maple syrup.
