Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 10 drops red food coloring
  • 0.25 cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Add the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, and beat until well combined.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Divide the dough into two equal portions. Leave one portion plain, and mix red food coloring into the second portion until the desired color is achieved. Start with about 10 drops and adjust as necessary.

Step 6

Take a teaspoon-sized amount of plain dough and roll it into a rope about 4 inches long. Repeat the same with the red dough.

Step 7

Gently twist one plain dough rope and one red dough rope together, pressing lightly to seal them. Curve the top of the twisted dough to form the shape of a candy cane.

Step 8

Place the shaped cookies onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Do not overbake.

Step 10

Optional: While the cookies are still warm, sprinkle crushed peppermint candies or candy canes over the top for added decoration and flavor.

Step 11

Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Step 12

Serve and enjoy your festive Cindi's Candy Cane Cookies!
