Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 15 oz canned tomato sauce
  • 15 oz canned kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 bag tortilla chips or crackers, for serving

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until the onion is softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the tomato sauce, kidney beans, chili powder, cumin, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

In a microwave-safe bowl, warm the cream cheese until softened and spreadable, about 20-30 seconds.

Step 5

Spread the softened cream cheese evenly over the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 6

Top the cream cheese with the beef and bean mixture, spreading it into an even layer.

Step 7

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the beef mixture.

Step 8

Bake the dip in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 9

Remove the dip from the oven and let it cool slightly for 5 minutes.

Step 10

Dollop the sour cream over the top and garnish with sliced green onions.

Step 11

Serve warm with tortilla chips or crackers for dipping. Enjoy!
