In a large mixing bowl, combine the raisins, currants, sultanas, and candied mixed peel. Stir well to ensure even distribution.
Add the breadcrumbs, plain flour, suet, dark brown sugar, lemon zest, orange zest, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, and a pinch of salt to the fruit mix. Toss everything together until thoroughly combined.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs lightly. Stir in the brandy and milk.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring well to form a thick batter.
Generously grease a 1.2-liter pudding basin with butter. Spoon the pudding mixture into the basin, pressing it down gently to ensure it is packed tightly.
Cover the pudding with a layer of greaseproof paper followed by a layer of aluminum foil. Secure tightly with string, ensuring the cover is waterproof.
Place a heatproof plate or trivet at the bottom of a large stockpot. Lower the pudding basin onto the plate, then fill the pot with boiling water until it reaches halfway up the pudding basin.
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and steam the pudding over low heat for 5 hours. Check periodically and top up with boiling water as necessary to prevent the pot from boiling dry.
Carefully remove the pudding basin from the pot and uncover it. Allow the pudding to cool slightly before turning it out onto a serving plate.
Serve warm with custard, brandy butter, or cream for a festive treat.
