Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 0.25 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 4 pieces burger buns

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until fully browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess grease and leave the beef in the skillet.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3

Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, paprika, and chili powder (if using). Mix well until the beef and vegetables are fully coated in the sauce.

Step 4

Add the beef broth (or water) to thin out the sauce slightly, ensuring it remains rich and flavorful. Simmer the mixture over low heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 5

Toast the burger buns lightly for extra texture and flavor, if preferred.

Step 6

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, then top with the other half. Serve immediately and enjoy!
