Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cups Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cups Whole milk
  • 0.5 cups Vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cups Boiling water
  • 1 cups Unsalted butter (softened, for frosting)
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cups Unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 0.25 cups Whole milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 4 ounces Semisweet chocolate (chopped, for glaze)
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper for easier removal.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed using a hand or stand mixer until the batter is smooth.

Step 4

Carefully stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin; this is normal and ensures a moist cake.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 6

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them onto a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Step 7

To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until a smooth, spreadable consistency is achieved. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 8

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and frost the top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Step 9

For the chocolate glaze, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat, add the chopped semisweet chocolate, and stir until smooth and glossy.

Step 10

Allow the glaze to cool slightly before pouring it over the frosted cake, letting it drip down the sides for a dramatic effect.

Step 11

Let the glaze set for 15 minutes before serving. Slice and enjoy the rich, chocolatey goodness with your loved ones!
