Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease an 8-inch round cake tin. Line the bottom with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
In a mixing bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Sift in the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until fully incorporated.

Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This should take around 5–7 minutes.
Remove the custard from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and chopped dark chocolate until smooth and fully melted.
