Ingredients

  • 180 grams all-purpose flour
  • 50 grams unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 115 grams unsalted butter, softened
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 50 grams brown sugar, packed
  • 2 pieces eggs, large
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 240 milliliters dry red wine (e.g., Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot)
  • 100 grams dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 30 grams powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In another large bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together using a hand mixer or stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Gradually pour in the red wine while alternating with the dry ingredients. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Avoid overmixing, as this could lead to a dense cake.

Step 6

Fold in the dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate gently with a spatula.

Step 7

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Be careful not to overbake.

Step 9

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 10

Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar, if desired, before serving.
