Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon espresso powder
  • 2 tablespoons boiling water
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the espresso powder in the boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved and set aside to cool slightly.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream the unsalted butter using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.

Step 3

Sift the cocoa powder into the butter and mix on low speed until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, alternating with the heavy cream, starting and ending with powdered sugar. Mix on low speed to avoid powdered sugar splatter, then increase to medium-high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

Step 5

Add the dissolved espresso mixture, vanilla extract, and salt to the frosting. Beat on medium speed until fully incorporated.

Step 6

If the frosting is too thick, add an additional tablespoon of heavy cream, one at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved. If it's too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.

Step 7

Taste the frosting and adjust sweetness or coffee flavor as desired (add a bit more espresso powder for a stronger mocha flavor).

Step 8

Use immediately to frost your favorite cakes or cupcakes, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
